The financial market in which securities, financial assets, shares, debentures and long-term debt securities can be bought and sold is known as the capital market. This system (reduced to a minimum) is very simple: companies put part of their capital up for sale so that investors can buy them and thus manage to finance the work or growth of the company. Investors become partners in the company in proportion to the capital contributed.
By becoming a partner, people expect to make a profit, which may happen if the company prospers, but there is no guarantee that this will happen. The capital market is a market of variable returns, so there is a lot of volatility in the price of securities.
Some of the benefits of the capital market are the following:
- If the company has good results and grows considerably, it can generate a great return in the long term. This is the main objective of investors.
- Thanks to this market, you can access the best companies in the world in terms of legality and security.
- Each company and each investor has the ability to adapt to their needs and possibilities.
- Companies with great potential, but with few economic resources, have the possibility of growing thanks to this system. In general, the more successful the company is anticipated, the easier it is to get investors to trust the company.
There are different capital markets and they can also be classified in different ways:
- If we look at the assets that are traded in them, we have the fixed-income securities market, obligations and bonds, or variable with shares. On the other hand, there is the long-term credit market in which bank loans and credits are.
- In terms of its structure and operation, we have the organized market, which is one that is regulated and supervised (so we can consider it official). There is also the OTC market that presents more risk since the negotiation takes place between the interested parties directly.
- The moment in time also defines the type of market, producing the primary market, which is where the securities are issued for the first time, and the secondary market, which is where the purchase-sales of securities already issued are made.
