Mining and metals are basic materials in modern life due to the large number of uses we give them in our routine. Many times (if not most) people do not realize that they are using a certain metal or mineral, but the reality is that they are essential in many of the items we buy.
Metals have to be extracted and that is an activity of the primary sector that allows us to manufacture and enjoy minerals and precious metals in many objects, technology, medicine, energy, textiles... This implies that many people live for and to find most of these scarce goods on the planet. The mining industry has had a great growth in the last century and people are still interested in continuing to exploit those goods that we can find on earth because, without them, we would no longer be able to manufacture many devices that we use in our day to day.
Society is very involved in the acquisition of these materials and, even more interesting, many companies from other sectors depend on them, so it is a fairly safe business that does not depend on many external agents that harm the business beyond supply and demand.
Such a basic and necessary activity is a safe place to invest because, no matter the economic situation of the country, there will always be a demand for these metals. On the contrary, we have some minerals that belong to that side of the sector that is most affected when the economy is in crisis or recession. Due to its high cost and its low functional utility, people stop consuming this type of product when they are short of money or see their financial stability in danger.
